Took the words write out of my mouth!

Writing has become a lost art form. Where literary gods have become equated with common bloggers. Where any celebrity can pen an autobiography because they think the world cares about their misspent youth. It’s sad. Much like singing, these days anyone can write. The truth is, there is a huge difference between writers and ‘writers’.

I have been writing for years now. And when I think about it. I have never stopped. It has always been a great passion of mine that dates back to when I was a kid. And it all began with poetry. I can’t remember exactly how young I was when I first discovered poetry, but I do remember how beguiled I was. It was mystifying. How you could disguise your true intentions with deceptive imagery. How your reader could fall victim to subjective interpretation. But poetry is never open to your own interpretation. The writer wrote it with a clear message contoured in the back of his/her mind, ultimately deceiving the reader.

With poetry, there’s a lot to account for. tonality, imagery, figures of speech. The list goes on and on. But sometimes you need to isolate the poetic mechanics and just write from the heart. To me, this is the most sincere and effective form of writing. It flows impeccably, word for word because it’s coming from a natural place.

I’ve been reading the work of Tyler Kent White. He isn’t a professional writer by occupation. It’s a just a passion he pursues, but he is truly gifted. Proving that true writers, write from the heart about the world as they see it.

Below is just one example of his writing.
But it's an injustice to just showcase one piece of his. He is ridiculously good.

Change of Heart

Valentines Day is upon us.
See how I phrased that?
Like a plague or Armageddon is upon us.

Well, if you’re single, it sure does seem that way doesn’t it? But why does it have to be? Over the years, I’ve always hated Valentines Day. Not because I was always single, but because I believe you shouldn’t wait for one day to spoil the one you love. Seriously, there are 365 days in a year.

But before you agree with me, just think about it for a second. As a girl, even if it is one day out of an entire year that your secret admirer sends you a card proclaiming his undying love for you, you will bask in the glow of his admiration. (Though the next day, it might sink in that he was actually a f*cking stalker!)

But for the moment you take it in. Picture who this charming stranger might be, what your lifetime together might be like, whether he’d kiss you till you’re gasping for air. Sigh. Mind you in all these images he looks pretty much like a silhouette that you’ve probably fleshed out in the image of..um..  I don’t know.. Zach Galifianakis? Hey I’m not passing any judgment. To each their own.

Once you’ve snapped out of your dream sequence, reality hits you. Someone, somewhere out there loves you and Valentines Day was the most appropriate day for them to show their affection. So while you may see Valentines Day as trivial or cliché, some see it as their opportunity to finally make a move on someone they’ve had their sights set on for a while.

Coming from a person who has always been anti-Valentines Day, I’ve recently had a change of heart. Mainly because I’ve come to realize that as a girl, you always want to feel loved. You want to be celebrated. You want your significant other to show you off to the world, even if it embarrasses you. I look at some photo’s that guys post of their girlfriends with captions like, “I feel like the luckiest guy to be with her” or “In a few days I’ll be married to this beautiful girl” and I think to myself, man Bruno Mars is definitely helping his species out. It’s true, as women we all want to be celebrated and loved. Even if it is just one day out of 365 in a year.

So on February 14th, I urge you to go out and make someone’s day.
Grant them that dream sequence at least one time this year :)
